Common Names

java fern 'broad leaf'
Java Fern ‘Broad Leaf’ (Microsorum pteropus ‘Broad Leaf’), also sometimes traded as Microsorum pteropus var. latifolius, is a popular and easy-to-care-for aquatic fern known for its distinctive wide leaves.
Categories: Background, Beginner, Midground, Plants

Its hardy and undemanding nature makes it an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. This variety is known for its broad, paddle-shaped leaves that are wider and thicker than the typical Java Fern (compared to the narrow leaf, windelov, or trident variations). The leaves are bright green and can create a lush, jungle-like effect in the aquarium. It can reach a height of 15-30 cm, with some specimens growing up to 40 cm tall. Black spots that may appear on the underside of the leaves are sporangia, the plant's reproductive organs, and are not a sign of disease.

Care

Prefers low to moderate lighting conditions. Intense, direct light should be avoided as it can lead to algae growth on the leaves. It is an epiphytic plant and should not have its rhizome buried in the substrate, as this will cause it to rot. It should be attached to hardscape such as driftwood or rocks using cotton thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe glue until its roots get a hold. Moderate or moving water is beneficial for this plant.

Propagation

Propagation is straightforward and primarily done by dividing the rhizome. Simply cut or gently pull apart the horizontal rhizome, ensuring each new section has a few healthy leaves. The plant also readily produces daughter plantlets on the edges, tips, or undersides of its mature leaves, which can be detached and replanted when they develop roots.

Trimming

Trim away old or damaged leaves at the base of the rhizome.
