Susswassertang

Süsswassertang, scientifically known as Lomariopsis lineata, is a unique freshwater aquarium plant prized for its unusual appearance and simple care needs. It's not a moss or a liverwort, but rather the gametophyte (prothallium) stage of a terrestrial fern from Southeast Asia. In the aquarium, it forms a tangled, spaghetti-like mass of translucent green ribbons, creating a soft, flowing texture that is a favorite among shrimp and small fish for hiding.

Care

Süsswassertang is an undemanding plant, making it an excellent choice for beginners. It can be left to float freely or attached to hardscapes like driftwood and rocks. This plant prefers low to medium light; intense lighting can cause it to melt. It tolerates a wide range of water parameters but grows best in temperatures between 20-28°C, a pH of 6.0-8.0, and soft water (0-8 dGH). CO2 injection and regular fertilization are not required but will promote healthier, faster growth.

Propagation

Propagating Süsswassertang is incredibly simple. Just separate a small piece from the main clump by pulling it apart or cutting it. The new fragment can be left to float or attached to decor, and it will slowly grow into a new, independent plant.

Trimming

Due to its slow growth, trimming is rarely needed. If the plant becomes too dense or overgrown, simply pull or snip away portions of the clump as desired.

Notes, Tips, and Considerations

• It is believed that all Süsswassertang in the aquarium trade today are clones of a single specimen discovered in 2001.
• While it is a slow grower, it can become quite dense over time, providing excellent cover for fry and shrimp.
